Fenton Art Glass
Burmese Collection
Burmese Glass, with its soft rose blush, inspires more collector enthusiasm than any other Fenton treatment.

History of Burmese Glass

In 1885, Frederick Shirley, an Englishman who immigrated to America, patented the formula for an opaque, heat-sensitive glass which, when warmed-in, shaded from lemon yellow to salmon pink.  As legend has it, when several of Shirley's pieces were presented to Queen Victoria, she exclaimed that the color reminded her of a Burmese sunset.
Shirley's Mt. Washington Glass Co., in New Bedford, MA, adopted the Burmese name.
In 1969, after many trials, Fenton chemist Charles Goe replicated Shirley's Burmese, & it has become one of the most collectible Fenton colors.   Burmese contains pure gold, & careful reheating coaxes the delicate pink shading into existence.   The yellow color comes from a small amount of depleted uranium in the batch.   Over the years, there has been variation in the color of the yellow from greenish to a cream hue.
The current Burmese reflects the original Burmese with a creamier yellow base.

  Limited Edition of 375

Made with pure gold, Fenton Burmese glass is always a delight to behold ... but delight is doubled when a piece is done by cameo artist Kelsey Murphy.
"Gauley River Sunrise" is Kelsey's first creation for the new Studio Fenton division.    This vase is limited to just 375 individually numbered pieces.  Each vase is signed by Kelsey Murphy and has the Fenton logo.

The vase begins with Fenton Burmese glass, carefully chilled and reheated to create an all-over, shiny pink exterior.   After the glass is annealed and a special mask is taped to the surface, the painstaking cameo carving process can begin.
Using Kelsey Murphy's advanced "vignetting" technique, each vase is carefully carved, by hand, employing aluminum oxide crystals under pressure to take away some of the surface.   Great individual skill & experience are needed to control this operation, as a dozen distinct stages of successive cameo carving are required to create the remarkable depth and intricate details you will see in this vase.
The final result of the cameo carver's art is simply awesome!  All the grandeur of a summer sunrise on West Virginia's scenic Gauley River is captured forever in this gorgeous Burmese Vase.

Epergne

L. G. Wright first brought the moulds for this reproduction of a Victorian Epergne to Fenton in the 1940s to see if it could even be made.
Frank Fenton accepted the challenge and the rest is history!
Hand crafting six individual pieces of glass to both fit together and match in color is a testament to the skill of the Fenton Craftsmen.
Pure gold in the formula creates a blush of rose, while spent uranium gives Burmese its yellow hue.
